So say charts compiled by Richard Gillmann from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio.

Featuring songs penned by Martin, The Long Awaited Album is the second album that the 72-year old, comedian, actor, clawhammer-style banjoist, and multiple Grammy Award-winner has recorded with the Grammy-winning North Carolina-based bluegrass group. Their first album together, Rare Bird Alert, was recorded in 2010. Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers earned the bluegrass music industry’s top honor in 2011 when they were named Entertainer of the Year during the 22nd Annual International Bluegrass Music Awards.

“Wildflowers” is one of a dozen tracks on Bidin’ My Time, the first studio album in more than a decade by country-rock pioneer Hillman – a founding member of the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Manasas, and the Desert Rose Band. It was produced by the late Tom Petty, who also is featured on the album, along with former members of the Byrds and Desert Rose Band.

The October 2017 FOLKDJ-L charts are based on 13, 841 airplays from 136 different DJs. Label and release date appear in brackets below, while the number of reported spins is shown in parentheses. The top albums and songs charts are posted on AcousticMusicScene.com, with permission.

Amy Soucy Wins 2016 Grassy Hill Songwriting Competition at Connecticut Folk Festival https://acousticmusicscene.com/2016/09/12/amy-soucy-wins-2016-grassy-hill-songwriting-competition-at-connecticut-folk-festival/ Mon, 12 Sep 2016 14:09:50 +0000 http://acousticmusicscene.com/?p=8885 Amy Soucy of Beacon, New York was named the winner of the 2016 Grassy Hill Songwriting Competition following a final round featuring five artists/acts that opened the Connecticut Folk Festival and Green Expo at New Haven’s Edgerton Park on Sept. 10.

A contemporary folk chanteuse, Soucy writes evocative songs exploring the kaleidoscope of human experience (dreams, longing, forgiveness and healing) and sings them in a voice that’s been called “powerful,” “comforting,” and “angelic.” Dubbed “enchanting” by singer-songwriter Sloan Wainwright and “just gorgeous” by New Jersey folk radio DJ Joe Pszonek, Soucy’s 2015 debut album, This River, takes listeners on a soulful journey through a lush landscape of life, love and earth – full of timeless, poetic songwriting, soaring melodies and shimmering harmonies. The CD was among the top folk albums of 2015 on both the Folk DJ Listserv and the Roots Music Report international radio airplay charts.

“For a relative late-bloomer to the folk scene, it feels really sweet to be recognized, and wonderful to share space with such amazing musicians,” says Soucy. “It inspires me to keep growing as a writer and a performer, and to keep engaging with the generous musicians and music-lovers in this community.”

As the songwriting competition winner, Soucy (joined by Stephen Murphy, who produced her CD) performed a short set on the festival’s main stage during the afternoon. She received a $150 cash prize and is guaranteed a performance slot in next year’s festival produced by the nonprofit organization CT Folk.

Soucy was also among the 24 artists/acts who performed in the Grassy Hill/ Falcon Ridge Emerging Artists Showcase during the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in August and was part of a NERFA Showcase co-presented by the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance, the Folk Music Society of Huntington (NY) and Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, PA earlier this year.

More information on Amy Soucy may be found on her website, www.amysoucymusic.com.

Editor’s Note: It was an honor and pleasure to serve as one of the five judges for this songwriting competition along with Rich Patchkofsky, Bill Revill, Kathy Sands-Boehmer and Steve Winters.

So say charts compiled by Richard Gillmann from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio.

Shifted is the trio’s fifth release including its eponymous 2010 debut. The trio – whose music fuses folk, newgrass, classical and rock stylings – is comprised of Jordana Greenberg (violin, vocals), Rebecca Reed-Lonn (banjo, vocals) and Maria Di Meglio (cello, vocals). The three met while students at Indiana University’s noted Jacobs School of Music, from which they each received performance degrees.

The August 2015 FOLKDJ-L charts are based on 12, 987 airplays from 134 different DJs. The number of reported spins (airplays) is shown below in parentheses, while label and release date appear in brackets. They are posted on AcousticMusicScene.com, with permission.

Pete Seeger, the American folk music icon who died last January at 94, was the most-played artist.

The 2014 year-end FOLKDJ-L charts are based on 159,806 airplays from 184 different DJs. The number of reported spins (airplays) is shown in parentheses, while label and release dates appear in brackets. Like the monthly Top Albums charts, these are posted on AcousticMusicScene.com with permission.

Ohio Folk DJ Norm Whitman Retires https://acousticmusicscene.com/2014/09/28/ohio-folk-dj-norm-whitman-retires/ Sun, 28 Sep 2014 16:12:42 +0000 http://acousticmusicscene.com/?p=7832 Detours on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 27. [To read the full article, click on the headline.]]]>

After more than 30 years as a folk DJ on WYSO, public radio for the Miami Valley from Antioch University in Yellow Springs, Ohio, Norm Whitman signed off following his show Detours on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 27.

“This was my last show and now I am retired and Detours has ended,” Whitman wrote in a short note accompanying the playlist that he posted to the Folk DJ Listserv, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio.

The Miami Valley native, who joined WYSO in the early 1980s as the host of a program called Stories We Could Tell, has long been involved in folk music as a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter performing solo and with various groups. He trained in radio while serving in the U.S. Army during the 1960s, and years later was encouraged by another folk DJ at WYSO to become a program host on the station.

Following Stories We Could Tell, Whitman hosted Acoustic Alchemy and Alchemy and was the co-host of Midnight Ramble with his friend Ramblin’ Ray for more than a decade before launching Detours. For two hours each Saturday afternoon, Whitman presented an eclectic mix of Celtic, folk, singer-songwriter, old-time and early country music.

“If you’ve grown tired of marching to everyone else’s drummer, tired of others telling you what is good or bad, tired of following fads, and you feel like you’re wandering through a sterile desolate landscape of music that seems to lack purpose, relevance or any aspect of meaning for you, then you’re ready to take a journey with me — a detour,” he wrote in the program description for the station’s website. “We can avoid the fast lane and journey down back roads to places less known and less traveled. Along the way you might find yourself laughing, crying, singing along; it can be a time out, a break. Who knows what wonders, what adventures you might find along the way.”

In a fitting ending to Detours, Whitman closed out the Sept. 27 show with “Down the Road” by Bill Staines. “It was and always has been an honor to be at WYSO for these last 30 plus years, but now I’m looking forward to taking some time off and then going to look for new adventures,” he wrote in his post to FOLKDJ-L.

AcousticMusicScene.com wishes Norm all the best wherever the road leads him.
