The Earls of Leicester Take Home a Bevy of International Bluegrass Music Awards https://acousticmusicscene.com/2015/10/03/the-earls-of-leicester-take-home-a-bevy-of-international-bluegrass-music-awards/ Sat, 03 Oct 2015 04:26:51 +0000 http://acousticmusicscene.com/?p=8411
The Earls of Leicester
The Earls of Leicester
The Earls of Leicester were the big winners during the International Bluegrass Music Awards show, Oct. 1, at Raleigh, North Carolina’s Duke Energy Center for the Arts. The group –- which pays homage to the musical legacy of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and their band, the Foggy Mountain Boys — took home Entertainer, Album (for its Grammy Award-winning self-entitled debut), Instrumental Group and Gospel Recorded Performance (“Who Will Sing For Me”) of the Year awards. In addition, bandleader Jerry Douglas and bandmate Shawn Camp were named top dobro player and top male vocalist, respectively. Rounding out the group are Barry Bales (bass and vocals), Johnny Warren (fiddle) and Charlie Cashman (banjo and guitars).

Speaking during the awards show, Douglas said: “This is unbelievable fun, and we’re going to keep doing it.”

The Tar Heel State’s own Balsam Range, last year’s Entertainer of the Year and previous winner for Album and Song of the Year, was honored as Vocal Group of the Year, while its “Moon Over Memphis” was named Song of the Year. The acoustic quintet’s Tim Surrett was named Bass Player of the Year.

During the show, Balsam Range performed another one of its songs “Stacking Up The Rocks,” a cappella. Other performers included Flatt Lonesome, the Gibson Brothers (hosts of the event), The Del McCoury Band and Hot Rize.

Alison Krauss joined singer-guitarist Larry Sparks and his band, the Lonesome Ramblers, on a medley of his signature songs after inducting him into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. Sparks recently released a new album to mark his 50th year in bluegrass music. Also inducted into the Hall of Fame was banjoist Bill Keith – whom Bill Monroe had hailed as the first banjo player who could play banjo songs in a fiddle style and with a fiddler’s virtuosity. Musician and author Jim Rooney and fellow banjo player Alan Munde sang Keith’s praises in inducting him, while banjoist Noam Pikelny – a founding member of the Punch Brothers and last year’s Album and Banjo Player of the Year winner — played Keith’s tune “Beating Around the Bush” in tribute.

The 26th Annual International Bluegrass Music Awards is the centerpiece of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA)’s five-day World of Bluegrass event that continues through Saturday, Oct. 3, with the Wide Open Bluegrass festival featuring free and ticketed events. Awards were voted on by the professional membership of the IBMA (www.ibma.org), the trade association for the global bluegrass music community. Prior to the evening awards show, winners of five 2015 Distinguished Achievement Awards were recognized.

Concord Music Group Acquires Rounder Records https://acousticmusicscene.com/2010/04/17/concord-music-group-acquires-rounder-records/ Sat, 17 Apr 2010 21:11:06 +0000 http://www.acousticmusicscene.com/?p=2358 Rounder Records, a leading American roots music label that is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary, has been acquired by the Concord Music Group. The Massachusetts-based independent label has released more than 3,000 albums in such genres as bluegrass, Americana, Cajun & Zydeco, folk, singer-songwriter and children’s music.

The self-titled 1975 release by J.D. Crowe and the New South (featuring future stars Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice and Jerry Douglas) helped to revitalize bluegrass and inspired such current stars as Rounder’s own Alison Krauss, who collaborated with Led Zeppelin front-man Robert Plant on the album Raising Sand, which was RIAA certified platinum in early 2008 and won five Grammy awards including Album and Record of the Year in 2009. Rounder also has been in the forefront of the preservation and re-release of historic recordings by the likes of Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers and Mississippi John Hurt, as well as a number of anthologies from the Library of Congress and the Alan Lomax Collection.

Rounder’s creative and marketing functions will continue to be based in Boston and its owners and founders Ken Irwin, Bill Nowlin and Marian Leighton Levy will remain active with the company in a creative and advisory capacities. Its senior management also will remain in place, according to a news release issued earlier this week by the Concord Music Group, one of the world’s largest independent record and music publishing companies. Its labels include Concord Records, Concord Jazz, Fantasy, Stax, Milestone, Riverside, Specialty, Telarc, Peak, Heads Up and Prestige, among others. Through a partnership with Starbucks Entertainment, Concord Music Group also launched the Hear Music label in 2007.

“The combination of Concord and Rounder makes so much sense on a creative, strategic and cultural level, asserts Glen Barros, president and CEO of the Concord Music Group. “With the addition of Rounder, Concord is gaining a magnificent catalog of recordings, the opportunity to work with more of the world’s most amazing artists, and a company filled with some great people. Plus, Rounder’s uncompromising commitment to authenticity and intense independent spirit is perfectly in line with everything that Concord is about.”

Leighton Levy, of Rounder, concurs, and adds: “For us, it’s always been about the music. We have long been aware of Concord’s commitment to great catalogue labels within a vibrant and contemporary independent context, and feel the Concord Records Group provides not only a great home for our music and artists, but also a stronger and more secure position going forward.”

Adds John Virant, president of Rounder: “We’ve always been the little label that could, and our new affiliation with Concord – another fiercely independent organization that shares our core values — ensures that we can remain true to our central calling: discovering and nurturing quality musical talent.”

Leighton Levy, who co-founded Rounder Records in 1970 with Ken Irwin and Bill Nowlin, was cited for overseeing the release of Raising Sand, the musical collaboration of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss that won the 2009 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, boosting the label’s global reach, and signing its first international deal.

An independent label focused on Americana, bluegrass, folk and similar genres, Rounder Records celebrates its 40th anniversary with a special event on October 12 at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee that will benefit the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS)’ Grammy in the Schools Programs. 2009 International Bluegrass Music Awards Bestowed https://acousticmusicscene.com/2009/10/02/2009-international-bluegrass-music-awards-bestowed/ Fri, 02 Oct 2009 06:11:39 +0000 http://www.acousticmusicscene.com/?p=1809 Dailey & Vincent retained the title of Entertainers of the Year when the 20th Annual International Bluegrass Music Awards were presented on Thursday, October 1, at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. The duo also was named Vocal Group of the Year.

Dan Tyminski, who some may recall from his years with Alison Krauss & Union Station, and who was the singing voice of George Clooney in the popular film O Brother, Where Art Thou, was named Male Vocalist of the Year and also took home the Best Album of the Year award for Wheels. Dale Ann Bradley was named Female Vocalist of the Year, while Instrumental Group of the Year honors were bestowed on Michael Cleveland and his group, Flamekeeper, who also were the recipients of the Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year award for their rendition of Bill Monroe’s “Jerusalem Ridge.” Cleveland, who is still in his 20s, was named Fiddle Player of the Year for the seventh time.

The SteelDrivers emerged as the Emerging Artists of the Year. “Don’t Throw Mama’s Flowers Away,” written by Chris Stuart and Ivan Rosenberg and performed by Danny Paisley & The Southern Grass, was awarded Song of the Year. And the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, which takes place annually in upstate New York, was named Bluegrass Event of the Year.

The awards show is the centerpiece of the International Bluegrass Music Association’ (IBMA)’s “World of Bluegrass,” which continues through Oct. 4 and also features a business conference and fan fest [see article posted June 21 in the Awards & Contests, Bluegrass & Beyond and Conferences of Note sections]. Grammy Award-winning country artist Kathy Mattea and bluegrass band Hot Rize (the first recipients of the IBMA Entertainer of the Year Award in 1990) hosted the show that was broadcast live on Sirius XM Radio’s Bluegrass Junction channel.

In addition to awards in more than 20 categories that are voted on by the professional membership of the IBMA, which serves as a trade association for the bluegrass music industry, two notable groups were inducted into the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame. They are The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers (a string band launched in 1937 by Ezra, Ray and Ned Cline in West Virginia) and The Dillards (an influential band, best known to many from their television appearances on The Andy Griffith Show, who are credited with helping both blaze the trail on the West Coast for progressive bluegrass bands during the 1960s and helping lay the foundation for what’s known as country-rock.
