Janis Ian, Molly Tuttle, Aoife O’Donovan, and Anais Mitchell Named 2023 International Folk Music Award Winners

International Folk Music Awards logoA few nights prior to the Grammy Awards, Molly Tuttle & The Golden Highway’s Crooked Tree was named Album of the Year in the International Folk Music Awards presented by Folk Alliance International on the opening night of its annual conference in Kansas City, Missouri. In addition to winning the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass album, Tuttle was among the nominees for Best New Artist.

Although she did not win any of the three Grammy Awards for which she was nominated, Aoife O’Donovan – who also is part of the trio I’m With Her (with Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz) and formerly co-founded and fronted the string band Crooked Still – shared the International Folk Music Awards’ Song of the Year honors with Anais Mitchell. O’Donovan was recognized for “B61,” while Mitchell, who created the hit Broadway musical Hadestown, was recognized for “Bright Star.”

Here’s a link to view the official video for Aoife O’Donovan’s “B61” and a link to view the official video for Anais Mitchell’s “Bright Star.”

Janis Ian was named Artist of the Year. The singer-songwriter best known for her early hits “Society’s Child” and “At 17,” also was a recipient of an Elaine Weissman Lifetime Achievement Award (Living) — along with the late Josh White (Legacy) and Oh Boy Records (Business/Academic). Ian was present in Kansas City to accept the award and share some remarks, while Josh White, Jr. accepted the award on behalf of his father – the most popular and influential Black folk singer of the 1930s and 1940s. Fiona Prine and her son accepted the award on behalf of their late husband/father John Prine, the revered, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and label co-founder. Following their remarks, Iris DeMent (who previously sang with Prine) and The Milk Carton Boys performed a couple of Prine’s songs.

In addition to the album, song and artist of the year awards that were voted on by FAI members, a number of other International Folk Music Awards were presented.

Singer-Songwriter Alisa Amador, a winner of NPR Music’s prestigious Tiny Desk Contest, was the recipient of the Rising Tide Award that was launched in 2021 to celebrate a new generation (under 30) artist who inspires others by embodying the values and ideals of the folk community through his/her creative work, community role, and public voice.

The Clearwater Award recognizing a festival that prioritizes environmental stewardship and demonstrates public leadership in sustainable event production was presented to the Shambala Festival — a four-day contemporary performing arts festival in Northamptonshire, England.

The People’s Voice Award was bestowed upon Leyla McCalla for unabashedly embracing social and political commentary in her creative work and career. The New Orleans-based artist, who grew up as part of a Haitian family in New York, is a multi-instrumentalist and composer. Besides being a solo artist, she has been a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and Our Native Daughters.

A recording of the International Folk Music Awards show appears on Folk Alliance International’s YouTube channel. Here’s a direct link to it.

Founded in 1999, Folk Alliance International (folk.org) is a nonprofit organization that aims to serve, strengthen, and engage the global folk music community through preservation, presentation and promotion.

Editor’s Note: As a Folk Alliance International board member (2014-2023), it was my pleasure to present a Spirit of Folk Award to Steve Edge, a veteran folk DJ on CITR and longtime concert & festival presenter in Vancouver, Canada. Other Spirit of Folk Award recipients included Amy Reitnouer Jacobs (the executive director of The Bluegrass Situation and a former FAI board president), Marcy Marxer (a multi-Grammy Award nominee and recipient, along with her partner Cathy Fink), Adrian Sabogal (a musician, producer, researcher, and founder of Marimbea – an organization dedicated to the well-being of the Afro-Colombian communities from Colombia’s South Pacific coast), and Pat Mitchell Worley (the longtime co-host of the syndicated roots radio show Beale Street Caravan, as well as the president and CEO of the Memphis-based Soulsville Foundation that seeks to perpetuate the soul of Stax Records).

Top Albums and Songs – May 2017 (FOLKDJ-L) https://acousticmusicscene.com/2017/06/03/top-albums-and-songs-may-2017-folkdj-l/ Sat, 03 Jun 2017 04:07:50 +0000 http://acousticmusicscene.com/?p=9444 Illinois-based singer-songwriter Joe Jencks had the most-played album (Poets, Philosophers, Workers and Wanderers) on folk radio during May 2017 while Willie Nelson’s “Still Not Dead” was the month’s #1 song. Jencks also was the month’s most-played artist, while Nelson was #2. So say charts compiled by Richard Gillmann from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio.

Poets, Philosophers, Workers & Wanderers is an emotional powerhouse,” says Ron Olesko, host of Traditions on WFDU (Teaneck, NJ). “Joe Jencks provides us with much needed inspiration and hope and reminds us what ‘love’ is really all about.” Claiming to be “literally stunned” by Jencks’ new solo album, Sirius XM Radio’s MarySue Twohy says it “tells our stories, his story, and the untold stories, as an American folk master can – with heart and unfettered perfection. Add this one to the folk canon.” Rich Warren, longtime host of the nationally syndicated The Midnight Special that emanates from Chicago’s WFMT, asserts: “Jencks’s captivating tenor voice, lofted by flawless production, demonstrates music of conscience and provides a feast for the ear and nourishment for the soul.” And John Platt, host of Sunday Supper on New York City’s WFUV, maintains “what really shines through on Joe Jencks new album are his resonant, honey-rich voice, his open-ended humanity, and his commitment to social justice.” Jencks is also part of the folk harmony trio Brother Sun that’s disbanding later this year.

The May 2017 FOLKDJ-L charts are based on 13, 911 airplays from 140 different DJs. Label and release date appear in brackets below, while the number of reported spins is shown in parentheses. The charts are posted on AcousticMusicScene.com, with permission.

Steven Fromholz, Texas Singer-Songwriter, 1945-2014 https://acousticmusicscene.com/2014/01/22/steven-fromholz-texas-singer-songwriter-1945-2014/ Thu, 23 Jan 2014 01:52:42 +0000 http://acousticmusicscene.com/?p=7346 Steven Fromholz, a well-respected Texas singer-songwriter, engaging and witty performer, author, actor, humorist, “singing cowboy,” acclaimed whitewater rafting guide, and one-time poet laureate of the Lone Star State, died Jan. 19 following a hunting accident. He was 68.

A pioneer among Texas songwriters, and considered a founder of the Texas Outlaw Country movement, Fromholz’ emergence as a songwriter preceded the burgeoning growth of the Texas music scene centered in and around Austin. Fromholz began performing in the 1960s after a stint in the Navy. He toured the west coast with long-time friend Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. Fromholz attended North Texas State University, where he served as president of the Folk Music Club founded there in 1963 — the year that he enrolled at the school. He also was part of the Michael Murphey Trio, along with Patty Loman and the trio’s namesake of “Wildfire” fame.

Fromholz’ enduring, historically oriented classic, “Texas Trilogy” has long been recognized as the most definitive song ever written about the State of Texas. “Texas Trilogy” is actually a set of three songs portraying life in rural Texas during the 1950s and is meant to be played as one three-movement suite. Lyle Lovett also recorded it on Step Inside This House (1998), a loving tribute CD to his favorite Texas songwriters, with Fromholz singing harmony vocals. Set in the town of Kopperl, in Bosque County, — where Fromholz spent some of his childhood years before high school, living with his younger brother James and their widowed maternal grandmother following his parents’ divorce when he was 10, before reuniting with his mother and settling in Denton, TX — “Texas Trilogy” appears on Fromholz’ seminal first album, Here to There. The hard-to-find album was recorded in Colorado in 1969 with Dan McCrimmon, partner in his short-lived western fold duo, Frummox. It also is the basis for a play Fromholz wrote called Bosque County, Texas, the title of one of the books he later published, and the basis for one by two other authors entitled Texas Trilogy: Life in a Small Texas Town.

For a short time in 1971, Fromholz played guitar and sang backup for Stephen Stills in the group Manassas before embarking on a solo career. After marrying for a second time, he left Colorado and returned home to Texas, settling in Austin, where he became legendary not only for his songwriting, poetry and performing, but as a community activist.

According to his official biography, “In 1993, he organized a peaceful mooning of the KKK [that] made headlines all over the world, became a standard for opponents of the Klan, and has been repeated over and over in the ensuing years by many activist groups.” He and his late friend, writer Molly Ivins, also enticed a group of friends to stage a peaceful and apparently effective “sleep in” on the steps of the state capitol to protest the arrest of homeless street people of Austin who were sleeping under bridges. Fromholz also was a tireless advocate for Texas Parks & Wildlife and also devoted time and energy to charitable organizations in the state – particularly those benefiting children and the indigent.

“Steven Fromholz and his work will be remembered, enjoyed and studied as music and literature forever,” Lyle Lovett told the Houston Chronicle. “His insight into human nature was equaled only by his ability to write about it in such detail that he made his listeners feel as if they were standing in the shoes of his characters, seeing what they saw, feeling what they felt.”

In addition to Lovett, Fromholz recorded with Willie Nelson, whose rendition of Fromholz’ ”I’d Have to be Crazy” rose to #2 on the Billboard country charts. Hoyt Axton, John Denver, and Jerry Jeff Walker, among others, also recorded his songs. Fromholz was inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame in 2003, while the Texas State Legislature named him Poet Laureate of the Lone Star State in 2007.

Several days after his unexpected death, a folksy holiday message from Fromholz still graced the home page of his website:

“We’re blessed here in the Fromholz camp. – Everybody’s healthy and happy and it’s been an absolutely super year. For us ranchin’ folk we’re doubly blessed. It’s been a year with RAIN – kinda like manna from heaven – and makes for real happy cows, too!…

Our daughter, Dear Darcie, is engaged to be married to her sweetie, John, and daughter, Felicity, now has her Master’s Degree (and we’re bustin’ our buttons with pride). Grandson, Zoe, visited us here at the ranch recently and he’s growing like the proverbial weed… Y’all stay warm, happy and… keep lovin’ Texas!”
